2013 - What An Amazing Year!
It's been a fantastic year, performing live at big events like Winterfest in Scotland, Salford Music Festival and of course rounding the year off with a wonderful concert at the The Etihad Stadium. When I first started playing live, I played the guitar and ukelele on a few of the songs, but now I just grab the microphone and have more freedom to really move on stage. I remember reading about Amy Winehouse in 'Amy, My Daughter', written by Mitch, Amy's dad where Amy also used to play guitar on stage when she first started. Amy stopped to focus on singing and performing and was even more amazing live.
I mentioned playing on the BBC and ITV in my blog earlier in the year. 2013 was amazing because I worked with some brilliant people to release my first EP 'Another Day' and was again invited to be interviewed by ITV Granada.
Once again I worked with John McLaughlin who produced my EP and Dave Thomas. Dave had just moved to New York, so I recorded the vocal for the tracks with Jud Mahoney. Jud had previously worked with artists such as Chris Brown, Mariah Carey, The Jacksons and had even been invited to work with Michael Jackson. It only took a few hours to record the vocal and the songs were sent to Dave in New York and was ready to release in October 2013.
I was asked to play the title track for the EP 'Start Again' live on BBC Radio Manchester on the Becky Want Show with Paddy Nicholson, my guitarist. I was also invited on a radio tour of Scotland with the fantastic Gus Michael and Amy Nelson from Pulse Radio in Glasgow. I played songs from my EP live, this time with Byron Wilson on guitar at Pulse as well as Sugar Radio and YourRadio near Glasgow and then off to Edinburgh to perform at Black Diamond FM, Castle FM and East Coast FM. We took a quick trip to the beautiful Loch Lomond where Gus told me he was an extra in the film 'The Water Horse' which I loved.
Whilst there I also played an impromptu concert at Barrhead High School as a special guest of Scotland's biggest boy band, Supanova. This led to being invited to perform with Supanova at their Christmas concert at the Classic Grand in Glasgow. The atmosphere there was amazing. When I arrived...
The queue was already forming down the street!
Winterfest was an incredible concert. There were thousands of people there in Drumchapel and it was a magical night. Brian Anderson who has photographed Amy Winehouse and the Rolling Stones, captured some amazing images of the night, including this one which he published in the first edition of the photographic magazine 'Glasgow Eyes'.
Filming the video for 'Start Again' was amazing. John-Paul Hersey, or JP as he prefers had already done some great work with the world famous Coronation Street titles and trailers such as Gok Wan's new Channel 4 Friday night dating show 'Baggage'. The team also included Space Digital headed by Matt Nelson formerly from the band The Milltown Brothers, who had previously filmed the special effects for Doctor Who. Tom Follows was my co-star in the video and was so funny and great to work with. So it was all really exciting and we had over 130,000 views on YouTube!
It was whilst performing on North Manchester 106.6 FM with the wonderful Katy Booth, that I was asked if I'd like to host my own youth show on Saturdays at the radio station. I thought that it would be great fun to talk about and play music I like, plus I'm still at school so Saturdays would be perfect, so I said 'Yes!' I've done a few shows now and have really enjoyed it.
The year ended wonderfully with the concert at The Etihad Stadium with Adam on keyboards, Byron on drums and Paddy on guitar. The atmosphere on the night was brilliant, especially as it was Boxing Day and Manchester City were playing Liverpool in one of the biggest games of the season. It rounded the year off perfectly and now I'm really looking forward to an exciting 2014.
Happy New Year and hope you have a fantastic 2014.
